JERUSALEM ARTICHOKES
Jerusalem Artichokes are easy plants to grow and are well suited to allotment growing. Pests to worry about are slugs that will attack young plants.
The Jerusalem Artichoke requires rich, moist soil to do well. They can grow up to 3m high so plant where they will not shade other crops.
Plant in spring as soon as the ground is workable, in late summer cut the stems down to 1.5m and remove flower heads, when foliage yellows, cut the stems down to just above ground level. Cover during winter to protect from ground frosts.
Remember to remove all tubers after cropping otherwise they may become invasive.
The Jerusalem Artichoke is native to the Mediterranean regions, but is widely grown.
