GLOBE ARTICHOKES

Globe Artichokes are easy to grow and require a sheltered, sunny position. Pests and disease may damage the plant such as Slugs, Aphids and Earwigs.

Division of the Globe Artichoke is by division in spring using a sharp knife, plant can be raised from seed but results can vary.

These plants are big and grow to 1.5m high and up to 1m across, place with enough distance apart so that they will not shade each other.

They need well enriched soil with plenty of manure and mulched to conserve moisture levels, keep the area around the plant free of weeds. Position the plants in a place where they will not become waterlogged in winter and cover the crowns if heavy frost is expected.

New plants will produce heads by late summer but these should be removed to encourage more growth. do not allow plant to flower or bud as this weakens the plant, Pick of buds before they open but when they stop growing.
