BASIL

Basil Plants make for fantastic plants for the garden and home as this plant is aromatic and used for cooking in many dishes.   

 

Basil plants are grown from seed and there is two varieties, there are the Sweet Basil plant and the Bush Basil plant. The Sweet Basil is the more common prefered choice of plant to grow and comes in many varieties such as lemon, cinnamon and mint Basil.

 

Basil plants must be kept warm and free from frost and cold weather, if grown in cold climates make sure it is covered. 

Seeds have to be planted in March and pricked out into pots when large enough to handle, in May the plant needs to be hardened off before planting out in late May if the plant is to be grown outside. 

 

The Basil plants flowers and buds need to be pinched out to encourage a more bushy growth.

 

Plant the Basil plant next to a plant that requires pollination as the Basil plant is aromatic and is extreamly attractive to bees. Basil plants have very similar growing conditions to Tomatoes and Sweet Peppers.

 

The Basil plant is native to India and has been cultivated for over 5000 years.
